Lovecraft's Cthulhu by zombiequadrille Lovecraft's Cthulhu by zombiequadrille
H.P. Lovecraft made two sketches of Cthulhu for correspondents. I used these sketches as the basis for this sculpture. Original is made from Super Sculpy and I've made copies with resin available. They are painted black/green with gold highlights. They are 7 3/4 inches tall.

Copies of this sculpture are available for $65  plus shipping.  Contact me at zombiequadrille@hotmail.com for details.

Lovecraft's sketches were of Cthulhu itself, or of the sculpture that is described of Cthulhu in the first part of The Call of Cthulhu?

Either way it looks amazing.

Since he's sitting on the inscribed rectangular pedestal I imagine HPL's pictures were intended to relate how the idol looked.

odd that there so very little sculptures/drawing from the original image done by Lovecraft.....
and those based off it are often to lean and "modern".

the description says he's a pudgy 'little' thing... and that the tentacles are more cilia than cephalapoid tentacles....
Too bad Lovecraft never took an art class...it would be very interesting to see what he imagined....

Yes. I've had people say I didn't have a clue as to what Cthulhu should look like; as if he's supposed to have a superhero body with claws, scales, and tentacles. From Lovecraft's words we can pretty much say that wasn't his idea;
'Flabby Claws', 'bloated corpulence', gelatinous green immensity'.

He tried going to Jenny Craig.....but everybody just went screaming mad when he showed up.....
it was so depressing, he ate yet another ice cream freighter ...again....

We really should just feed him a turkey farm or two....that way he'll sleep quite well from the L-tryptophan....

Got my Lovecraft's Cthulhu statue today. Quite simply, it's amazing. The detail and work that went into creating it can't be put into words. When I opened the package and unwrapped it I felt an anxiety I hadn't had for a long time. Thanks Joe. You are the best! Also really enjoyed the documentation came with it.

Thanks, Mike. The anxiety will only increase when a certain number of statues have gone out creating a 'critical mass' of some kind, one that will force the stars into allignment.

These are fantastic! Faithful to the original drawings and you've really made Cthulhu look properly inhuman with the worm-like tentacles. :D

Thank you. I've had some say that the tentacles looked like vacuum cleaner hoses. Can't reall argue with that, but I was going for the 'worm' look.

I was suprised to find TWO sketches by HPL. I find the one posted all the time and the second seems to be gone from the web now. The original poster told who HPL had sent it to and I didn't write it down at the time. Wish I had.

I have no doubt he would, it even looks like it's been carved of a nice strange looking stone. if I did have to criticize something (and it pains me to do so :P) is to maybe have some of his face tentacles curling out or going in different directions a bit, but I mean it looks amazing and you've already carved it so it doesn't matter, and having them hang off his face all slimy like is also a good creepy way to have them. I'll definitely have to get one soon

The Best element about this particular Eidolon would have to be how the Rinded Tentacles, Buglike Eyes And Cerebrum - alongside the withered wings - suggest such vague unearthliness that the only comparison you can draw to is other creatures from Lovecrafts Mythology - That, I believe, is the Mark of proper Lovecraftian Horror.

Namely, that an unearthly Creature, by definition, should have no similarity to anything of the Earth.
Also, that an Object of Horror should look as Horrible as possible to Human Instinct - such that if it was Half-seen in the Dark corner of a room by an unprepared Soul it should cause Mind-damaging Shock.

Also, one of a diligent Love of 1950s Monster films will Note that many of the Monsters of particularly High quality succeed in following this Rule and Law of Monstercraft.

No similarity to anything earthly? Since my main rule of commenting is to be polite, I cannot say anything here, except to ask for examples. In other words...I do not agree with you except in the vaguest way. And rule and law of monstercraft is an oxymoron.

I will first say that I just barely watch what I say - and that by totally unearthly I don't mean Kalatulu - who's a parody on Earth-life - I mean the Black, formless ''presences'' beyond Time-space's curve - which have been for Vigintillions of Cold, Black Eternities before Gods ever dreamed of Building The Earth of The Void - or Mankind of The Mud.

Incidentally,

Well, I fancy myself too Idle and Untrained to say what I am...

But if there's is One set of things I'm familiar with - It's Lovecraft's fiction.

The Subject of that fiction I don't fancy anyone knows well - being that It's of all that is Unfamiliar.

Or Existential,

Or Metascientific,

or what-all you wish to call it.

The point is - That the whole purpose of The Lovecraftian Milieu is not to aim for The ''Supernatural'', ''Magickal,'' or '' Daemoniacal,''

but rather to Create Horror which Calls up The form of Humanity's most Intrinsic, Instinctive, Fears.

Horrors so Horrid and terrible to know, that even just a hint, a thought, or a slight image is maddening, and Mind-shattering to behold for a Sensitive, scholarly sort - who can put the WHOLE Image of the Nightmare together.

It's The Type of Horror which should ''sear The Soul'' so to speak.

The Whole point is to elevate Horror-fiction beyond Placid tales of Ghosts and Daemon-possession - To make Horror into High Art.

a Full-blown Cult Practice, with its own Followers, And Its Own Gods. Its own Indifferent, Uncaring, Malignantly Soulless Gods.

Cthulhu, at least, is a more Jovial, Happy-go-lucky sort of Lovekraft - albeit towards Murder, Gluttony, and Sin unfettered - That's why The Chinese Language name for Good ol' Tulululu is ''Xie-shen'' -

or ''Devil-God.''

[This will break from The Tenor I'm working at here - but I should Thank you for your time. ]
